My Top 5 Ice Cream Scoops of Summer

Anyone who knows me well knows that ice cream is one of my favorite foods.  I love it all year round whether the weather is hot or cold, but it’s especially delicious on hot summer days!  It’s definitely been one very hot summer so far here in Los Angeles and I’ve been indulging in some very good ice cream scoops.  Keep reading below to find out my top 5 places in LA for my favorite ice cream spots!

Fosselman’s Ice Cream is a local favorite of mine and has been around since 1919, so being from the San Gabriel Valley area I’ve been coming here for ice cream since I was a little girl.  They’ve got a wide variety of over 40 flavors to choose from, some very exotic like taro and lychee to seasonal specialties like cookie butter and Nutella.  My personal favorite from Fosselman’s is coffee & cookies where they combine delicious creamy coffee with bits and pieces of Oreo cookies, it is perfection!

I love Salt & Straw for their interesting flavor combinations that keep you coming back for more.  Their ice cream is super smooth and creamy and the flavors just leave your taste buds feeling happy.  I wrote a more in-depth blog post about my Salt & Straw ice cream experience and you can read it here.

3. Carmela Ice Cream

If I had just one word to describe Carmela Ice Cream it would be divine!  Their ice cream is seriously rich, creamy, and delectable in the best ways possible.  They opened their first creamery in Pasadena to support the local farmers markets and they’ve now expanded with scoop shops across LA as the demand for their delicious ice creams keeps growing.  I’ve tasted quite a few lavender honey scoops before and I can honestly say that Carmela makes the most luxurious tasting one I’ve ever had!

2. Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream

2. Van Leeuwen 2Coffee (on top) + Black Sesame, Ash, Chocolate Cake (on bottom) in a cup

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream started as a food truck in New York City and they’ve grown into a mini ice cream empire with stores and trucks in NYC and LA, and I’m so glad they did because they have become one of my favorite places to indulge in ice cream.  They have amazing flavors that are super rich and creamy, and one of the best things about Van Leeuwen is that they offer vegan choices.  They serve up a pretty awesome Earl Grey Tea ice cream (my favorite from them), but the star of the summer was their seasonal specialty, Black Sesame, Ash, Chocolate Cake ice cream, which is now a part of their permanent menu!

1. McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams

1. McConnell'sEureka Lemon & Marionberries (on top) + Earl Grey Tea & Shortbread Cookies (on bottom) in a waffle cone

McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams is hailed as the “best in the world” by TIME Magazine and I do not disagree!  I’ve tried a lot of different kinds of ice creams and McConnell’s is the most memorable one I’ve tasted and the one that’s left me the most satisfied.  I keep dreaming of their Eureka Lemon & Marionberries flavor – it’s lightly tart and super refreshing with the perfect amount of sweetness.  I also tried their Earl Grey Tea & Shortbread Cookies flavor which was also amazing.  It had bits and pieces of shortbread cookies in it which complemented the creamy texture of the ice cream so well.  I cannot get enough of their ice cream and I want to make trips down to Grand Central Market just to have it!
